Ford Explorer Towing Capacity

The Ford Explorer has a maximum towing capacity of 5,000 pounds when properly equipped. To get this kind of capability, you'll need the available Class III Trailer Tow Package, which includes:

  • A Class III trailer hitch receiver
  • 4-pin wiring harness
  • Engine coil cooler
  • 7-/4-pin wiring harness

The Explorer also comes standard with Trailer Sway Control to help you keep your load steady. If this system senses a dangerous amount of sway in your trailer, it'll provide strategic adjustments to the engine and brakes to help you keep everything under control.

Ford Explorer Engine Specs

If you like your SUV to have a lot of power, you'll probably be impressed by the Ford Explorer engine specs. It comes standard with a 3.5L V6 engine that delivers 290 horsepower and 255 lb-ft of torque. It also has the following two engine options:

  • 2.3L EcoBoost® I-4: 280 horsepower, 310 lb-ft of torque
  • 3.5L EcoBoost® V6: 365 horsepower, 350 lb-ft of torque

Both the V6 engines have a 5,000-pound towing capacity, while the I-4 engine can tow a maximum of 3,500 pounds when properly equipped.

All three engines are paired with a 6-speed SelectShift® automatic transmission.

As a standard feature, the Explorer comes with front-wheel drive (FWD); however, Intelligent 4-Wheel Drive (4WD) is available for drivers who want some extra traction control, which includes the Terrain Management System™.

Interior of the Ford Explorer

The Ford Explorer interior has plenty of technology and comfort features that can add a lot of fun, convenience, and connectivity to your time behind the wheel.

As a 3-row SUV, the Ford Explorer can seat seven passengers comfortably and offers 151.5 cubic feet of total passenger volume. The driver also has 41.4 inches of headroom and 42.9 inches of max legroom. With an available 10-way power-adjustable driver's seat with power lumbar support, you can find the perfect setting for maximum comfort and visibility.

The interior is rounded out by the available 8-inch infotainment touchscreen display as part of the SYNC® 3 system. This includes connectivity features, such as Android Auto™ and Apple CarPlay™, as well as Bluetooth®-streaming audio and hands-free smartphone connectivity.

Ford Explorer Cargo Space

Due to its spacious interior, the Ford Explorer offers impressive cargo space measurements:

  • Cargo volume (behind third row): 21 cubic feet
  • Cargo volume (behind second row): 43.9 cubic feet
  • Cargo volume (behind first row): 81.7 cubic feet

If you need to expand your cargo volume, the third-row seats can fold down completely flat to create a level loading surface.

Loading up is easy, as well, with the available hands-free foot-activated liftgate that opens automatically with a simple kick of your foot under the rear bumper.
